Editorial from Summer 1996 Edition Dear Readers, Bill Taylor's Wire Strings is always fascinating, but we're particularly excited about it this time. Why? Because this is historical research on the move, things happening up at Ardival Harps in the Highlands of Scotland which are casting new light on how the harp used to be played. And if we understand more about the past, think of the implications for the future! Coincidence has been hard at work - as Alison was doing a pre-Wimbledon visit to a string maker to see how the strings we use today are made, Bill was back a few hundred years with the Picts, and so this edition brings you we hope a fair bit of enlightenment and interest on those temperamental but necessary items, strings. It's time to thank all the people who write for us, for your careful and considered reporting and reviewing of what's going on in this increasingly busy and creative harp community. Sounding Strings wouldn't exist without your support and your superb writing. And to all of you, please keep on telling us what you or your harp group is up to. Whether professional or amateur, your news is our life-blood, remember! and you're allowed to blow your own trumpet now and then. Have a happy summer, Alison and Aidan |
